Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action-thriller Leo, starring ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, is less than a week old at the box office, but it is already among the top-grossing Tamil movies of all time. On day six in theatres, Leo collected Rs 31 crore across India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the film’s domestic nett collections to Rs 248 crore, meaning that it has likely already passed the Rs 250 crore mark by now.

Leo delivered the second-biggest opening for a Tamil film last week, when it made Rs 64 crore across India on day one, a Thursday. The film added Rs 35 crore on day two, Rs 39 crore on day three, Rs 41 crore on day four and Rs 35 crore on day five. Leo is already the second-biggest Tamil film of the year so far, the fifth-biggest Indian film of 2023, and the highest-grossing film of Vijay’s illustrious career.

On day six, which was also a holiday on account of Vijay Dashmi, the film registered 65% occupancy for the main Tamil-language version, which is a very strong mid-week figure that indicates just how pleased fans seem to be with what Lokesh has delivered. Most of the film’s revenue continued to flow in from Vijay’s home turf, Tamil Nadu, where it made Rs 21.5 crore, but Leo is also delivering remarkable numbers in Kerala, where it made Rs 5 crore on day six. The Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions contributed Rs 3.5 crore to the film’s total. Leo is facing competition in the Telugu states from Bhagavanth Kesari and Tiger Nageswara Rao. The film has made nearly Rs 15 crore from its Hindi version, which isn’t being screened in multiplexes due to a dispute.

Leo is now the biggest instalment of Lokesh’s interconnected cinematic universe of films, having overtaken the Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram. The series also includes the Karthi-starrer Kaithi, and will supposedly continue with Lokesh’s upcoming Ranijikanth-starrer. If this turns out to be true, the filmmaker would’ve united three of the biggest male Tamil stars in history under one franchise. With an estimated Rs 450 crore global gross, according to Sacnilk, Leo is now the fourth-biggest Tamil film in history, behind Ponniyin Selvan-I, Jailer and 2.0.
