KUALA LUMPUR – Upcoming Marvel movie Thunderbolts* will feature English actress Florence Pugh, American actor David Harbour and Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

On Sept 23, Marvel Studios unveiled the film’s first teaser trailer on YouTube.

A minute and four seconds in, Pugh, playing skilled assassin Yelena Belova, appears at a familiar Malaysian location.

According to observant netizens, the scene was shot at Medan Pasar in KL, with the former Menara HSBC South Tower in the background.

Earlier in July, Pugh alluded to filming at KL’s Merdeka 118. The 118-storey skyscraper is the second-tallest building in the world at 678.9m, behind Dubai’s Burj Khalifa at 828m.

When asked by Variety magazine about the biggest stunt she performed in the movie, the 28-year-old said: “Jumping off the second-tallest building in the world.”

The film follows a team of anti-heroes conducting covert operations for the government of the United States. The movie, set for release in May 2025, also stars English actress Hannah John-Kamen and American actor Sebastian Stan.

Many Malaysian fans have expressed their excitement about their home country being featured in a major Hollywood production.

One Marvel fan, who wanted to be known only as Fatin, told StarLifestyle, the Lifestyle portal of Malaysian newspaper The Star, that she had heard rumours about the movie being filmed in Malaysia. The trailer made her even more excited.

“I heard about Florence shooting a skydiving scene at Merdeka 118, so I hope we will get to see that and more Malaysian landmarks in the film,” she said.

Another netizen on X – formerly Twitter – posted: “They filmed parts of Thunderbolts* in KL. Have to watch the movie for Malaysia.”

Rumours of Pugh filming in KL surfaced in June when a fan account on X claimed the Don’t Worry Darling (2022) actress was in the city to film a Marvel movie.

The speculations were fuelled when Pugh’s sister Arabella Gibbins posted a photo of the Petronas Twin Towers on her Instagram account and tagged Pugh in the post. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
