Politicians pay tribute to Tun Daim's passing
KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 13): The late Tun Daim Zainuddin, who passed away on Wednesday morning at 86, was widely recognised for his pivotal role as former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s chief economic troubleshooter.
The Kedah native who served as finance minister twice, first from 1984 to 1991, and again from 1999 to 2001, was credited for steering Malaysia through two recessions. His significant contributions to the nation were recognised by key politicians, who conveyed their condolences following his passing.
Prime MinisterDatuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim

Daim passed away this morning. I have lost a friend who fought alongside me for the people, the country, and religion. I am deeply saddened. He should have been honoured for his contributions to the struggle. But in the end, he was unjustly rebuked. Unjustly! Because of grudges. Is this the price one pays due to grudges? Oh Allah, judge Daim with fairness. Grant him a place in the hereafter as a fighter for his people. I can only pray. We shall reunite in a certain time. Amin Ya Rabbal Alamin.

My deepest condolences to Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid and the family of Tun Daim Zainuddin. On May 5, 2018, just days before the historic 2018 general election, Tun Daim visited Ayer Hitam to campaign for me, which became quite a sensation at the time. Through my interactions with him, I found Tun Daim to be incredibly well-informed about global and regional affairs, with an extensive network of contacts with foreign leaders. Tun Daim certainly had many critics, and he was involved in both the successes and the challenges of the previous regime. I had hoped he would complete his memoir, as very few have operated at so many levels — both internationally and domestically — and for such an extended period, dating back to the 1960s. My condolences once again.

I lost a mentor today. I first met Tun Daim in 2015, when I was new to politics, still an unknown figure. However, he was very keen to offer his advice and share his experiences, not just with me but with many other young leaders as well. He truly believed that young people are not just leaders of the future, but leaders of TODAY.
When I served in the Cabinet and fought for electoral reform through UNDI18, Tun played a key role by connecting me with leaders from various parties. He opened doors and challenged me to complete the remaining efforts. When I sought guidance on policy matters, Tun generously provided me with a collection of articles to read before we had our in-depth policy discussions. He was an avid reader and a meticulous planner.
When I was at my lowest point, he was there to remind me that success would not come without difficult sacrifices. I miss you, Tun. I pray that the late Tun is placed with the faithful in paradise.
