Nigel Ng found fame for himself through the persona of Uncle Roger – a stereotyped Asian uncle who comments on food preparations and if you’re a keen follower, there’s no Uncle Roger without “Haiyaa”.
In his latest YouTube video, Uncle Roger took the time to review 1 of the travel vlogs by the late Anthony Bourdain – American chef and author. Anthony was well-known for his passion in learning about food and cultures around the world, as well as his love, respect, and appreciation for hawker food, including those in Malaysia.
Well, if there’s one thing that keeps people coming back to Malaysia, it’s ALWAYS the food and the best part? It doesn’t have to be fancy, 5 Michelin-starred fancy food!
In the video titled Uncle Roger Misses Anthony Bourdain, Uncle Roger reviewed the episode where Anthony visited Penang for the famous hawker food, which he dubbed “bloody magnificent” for the Assam Laksa. However, Anthony’s take on Malaysian food was not the only highlight. Uncle Roger made a shocking (but exciting announcement)!
“Another reason to visit Malaysia is, Uncle Roger is going to open my very 1st restaurant here.”
At the time of writing, the Malaysian comedian has yet to share more details on the opening date or the concept of his upcoming restaurant. However, fans do know that we won’t need to wait too long because the restaurant is set to open sometime this year in 2024!
“Don’t tell anyone. This is a little secret for niece and nephew.”
In the video, Uncle Roger also took the opportunity to promote his signature product – Uncle Roger Chili Crab Pasta, which is available for purchase online.
Despite the high shipping cost, Uncle Roger assured the buyers that they can expect a restaurant-quality dish and the noodle is NOT an instant noodle.
We don’t always get to see Uncle Roger’s fond review of another cook (especially not Jamie Oliver). At the end of the video, Uncle Roger expressed what he really thought of the late amazing chef.
“I am very sad that I will never get to meet Anthony Bourdain. If we meet, we will really get along because Anthony loves authenticity and humble food, just like me.”
