Sky pundit reacts to Wout Weghorst contribution v Arsenal

23 Jan 2023

Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst made his second start in a week. Unfortunately he is still looking for his first win for the Red Devils.

The Dutchman did have a useful impact, noted by the Sky Sports analysts following Manchester United’s first goal.

United’s opener was scored by Marcus Rashford, after an excellent piece of skill, he struck a fiery effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.

Along with Rashford receiving praise, Weghorst’s run was credited for being the key reason United’s top scorer was able to net his 17th goal of the season.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp picked out Weghorst’s contribution towards Rashford’s goal, which opened the scoring in the 3-2 defeat.

Redknapp said: “It’s a small role but its an important role. He just takes Gabriel a little bit to his left.

“That opens up the space [for Rashford]. It is a magnificent goal.”

This was the second goal Weghorst has had a hand in this week with his off-ball movement.

Against Crystal Palace it was the Dutchman’s run which distracted the defenders, allowing Bruno Fernandes to move into the box unmarked to score.

The downside of Weghorst’s performance was a lack of personality on the ball. He did not attempt a single shot at goal, and the service into him has to improve.

He worked hard defensively for the team, making four interceptions, but does not yet look in sync with his teammates.

He has not yet done enough to earn a starting role ahead of Anthony Martial. Once the Frenchman is fit again, he will be the preferred option.

But with no sign of this on the horizon, Weghorst could lead the line in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg this week away at Nottingham Forest. Let’s hope the service into him can improve.
