West Ham Considering Contract Extension for Michail Antonio After ...
West Ham United is considering extending Michail Antonio's contract after the Jamaican forward suffered a serious injury in a car accident this past weekend. Antonio, 34, is set to expire his contract in the summer, but according to the British newspaper "The Times", the club is willing to renew him once he recovers from the leg fracture, which could keep him out of action for up to a year.
The forward, who has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances for the Hammers, could face a similar situation to Angelo Ogbonna, who tore his knee ligament in November 2021 and was still renewed by the club despite the serious injury.
Although West Ham does not have insurance to cover such situations, the club will continue paying Antonio’s weekly salary of £90,000.
The player crashed while driving his Ferrari outside of London and had to be airlifted to the hospital. As a gesture of support, West Ham will auction several items to cover his medical and transportation expenses.
Additionally, in the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, his teammates paid tribute to Antonio by stepping onto the field wearing shirts with his name. Jarrod Bowen celebrated his goal by showing a shirt with Antonio's name and number 9 to the fans at London Stadium.
