ENGLAND GO 2-0 UP IN THE SERIES

It’s been a magnificent weekend for England, who go 2-0 up in the series. These are the remaining matches of the tour:

ENGLAND WIN! England 161-3 (Livingstone 23, Bethell 3) Target: 159 Overs: 14.5

Shepherd comes back into the attack and Livingstone crunches him away for a lofted drive for four. And he follows it up with a brutal cut that beats the fielders on the rope.

The win comes up with a big six, sliced away into the off side. It’s an emphatic win for England.

England 145-3 (Livingstone 8, Bethell 2) Target: 159 Overs: 14

England require 14 runs from 36 balls

Four byes and an edged boundary from Livingstone damages an impressive over from Terrance Hinds on debut. Tight bowling and a lot of variations are encouraging for future matches, which is probably why he’s bowling right now, with this game effectively done as a contest.

DOUBLE-WICKET OVER! England 132-3 (Livingstone 2, Bethell 1) Target: 159 Overs: 13

Will Jacks, caught Matthew Forde bowled Romario Shepherd, 38 (29)

Jos Buttler, caught Rovman Powell bowled Romario Shepherd, 83 (45)

Frustration for Jacks, who misses out on a bit of a gimme, but picks out Forde in the deep, who catches on the second attempt. The departing batter is extremely unhappy – he knows there may not be many chances left for him in the England XI without a genuine statement knock. 38 from 29 is good, but not quite what he wanted.

Shepherd should get Buttler as he reaches for a cut and picks out Rutherford in the ring… who drops it! But the England captain falls to the very next ball, looking for a maximum over long off but picking out Powell in the deep. He acknowledges the crowd as he walks off following a superb knock of 83 from 44.

That means two new batters in the middle, but Bethell and Livingstone settle things down with singles at the end of the over.

England 127-1 (Jacks 38, Buttler 83) Target: 159 Overs: 12

Buttler is lighting up Bridgetown. He laces a drive off Chase back down the ground, which doesn’t even get that high but still carries all the way for six, and he follows it up with another dismissive swipe that carries all the way over the long on rope (easily, to be honest with you). He’s seeing this big, is Jos Buttler, and finishes the over with a drilled four down the ground. Tune in on TNT Sports 1 to catch the fireworks.

England 109-1 (Jacks 37, Buttler 66) Target: 159 Overs: 11

Oh my. Well, the game is almost certainly over as a contest, but the fans can sit back and enjoy a real show from Jos Buttler.

An absolutely sublime drive races away through extra cover for four as Terrance Hinds comes into the attack, and that is just the start of the debutant’s troubles in the over.

Buttler booms a huge six over long on, bringing up the century stand with Jacks, who finishes the over with a four of his own as England race towards their target.

43 runs have come off the last three overs.

FIFTY! England 94-1 (Jacks 33, Buttler 55) Target: 159 Overs: 10

Big again from Buttler as he picks out the leg-side boundary with another huge six to bring up his half-century. The England skipper has certainly found his feet in this new role at number three, and he’s put his side in complete control of the chase here in Barbados.

England 78-1 (Jacks 31, Buttler 46) Target: 159 Overs: 9

Buttler is up and running now. A miscue flies straight back over the bowler’s head for four off Motie, and he follows it up with a much more controlled and impressively audacious shot, that soars high over long on, onto the roof of the stand and away out of the ground. Brutal hitting.

England 66-1 (Jacks 30, Buttler 35) Target: 159 Overs: 8

Buttler finds the boundary again, but it’s fortunate this time, as a thick edge runs away for four off Hosein. That’s the end of his overs, with figures of 1/24.

England 60-1 (Jacks 29, Buttler 30) Target: 159 Overs: 7

After all of that action it’s a relatively subdued over as Motie goes for just four singles.

England 56-1 (Jacks 27, Buttler 28) Target: 159 Overs: 6

England are flying as Shepherd’s first over gets the treatment.

Jacks lofts him down the ground for a one-bounce four first up, before Buttler gets in on the act. The England skipper picks out the backward point rope with a smear of a shot, then lofts a peach of a drive all the way over the sightscreen for a big six, follows it up with a deft scoop away to fine leg and finishes with a slightly chancy scoop for two through cover.

That’s 21 runs off the over and England are now well ahead of the required rate at the end of the powerplay.

England 35-1 (Jacks 21, Buttler 12) Target: 159 Overs: 5

It’s the first maximum of England’s innings as Jacks lines up Hosein and levers him long over mid-off for six.

West Indies appeal for a catch next up as the ball loops up and is taken by Pooran, but it didn’t catch bat or glove on its way.

Nine runs come off the over, which means England are well-placed but still slightly behind the required rate.

England 26-1 (Jacks 14, Buttler 11) Target: 159 Overs: 4

England have recovered well from that early wicket, and this time it’s Buttler who gets the travelling fans on their slightly unsteady feet, picking out the boundary with two classy late cuts.

England 18-1 (Jacks 14, Buttler 3) Target: 159 Overs: 3

More class batting from Jacks, who hammers Hosein through the covers for four. He really could do with some runs, the England opener. It’s been a lean trip for him so far.

England 11-1 (Jacks 9, Buttler 1) Target: 159 Overs: 2

Jacks gets a bit fortunate as an edge drops short of the slips, and a nip off his hip also falls short of the fielder and short fine leg.

And England get up and running as Forde’s over continues, with Jacks finding the rope twice in the over with a classy square cut and a fierce uppish drive.

WICKET! England 2-1 (Jacks 1, Buttler 1) Target: 159 Overs: 1

Phil Salt, caught Brandon King bowled Akeal Hosein, 0 (1)

What an outstanding start for West Indies! The home side opt to use Hosein first up and it’s a masterstroke. Phil Salt, fresh off a century, falls to the very first ball of the innings as he slices a catch to King, who holds on after a bit of juggling.

The over almost gets even better as Buttler bottom edges the spinner, but is saved when the ball bumps down into the ground and back over the stumps. Two singles come off the over and England need to settle down and fast.

WEST INDIES SET ENGLAND 159 TO WIN IN BARBADOS

England require 159 to win in Barbados after the bowlers delivered another impressive showing in the second T20 of the series against West Indies.

Saqib Mahmood was effective in the powerplay once again, taking 2/20 in three overs, while Jofra Archer was also threatening up top with the swinging ball, finishing with 1/31 from four.

England bowled ten overs of spin in the innings, including four from young all-rounder Dan Mousley, who bagged his first international wickets, finishing with figures of 2/29 after bowling his full allocation – including taking the final over of the innings.

West Indies struggled to get going for much of their effort having been put in to bat first by England, but still managed to scramble together a competitive total, with Rovman Powell the top-scorer with 43 (41). Some impressive late hitting from Romario Shepherd (22 from 12) and Matthew Forde (13 from 6) boosted the score, but West Indies will need their bowlers to shine if they are to deny England a 2-0 lead in the series.

WICKET! West Indies 158-8 (Matthew Forde 13, Terrance Hinds 5) Overs: 20

Romario Shepherd, caught Will Jacks bowled Dan Mousley, 22 (12)

Interesting experimentation from England, who have an over of Mahmood left, and all of Overton’s overs remaining, but opt to give Mousley his fourth and final over to finish the innings.

It’s a big challenge for the youngster, but he starts it superbly as Shepherd miscues a low full toss to Jacks in the deep.

Terrance Hinds is the new batter and he scores his first international runs in style, slamming a drive back over the bowler’s head for four.

A missed pace-on yorker beats Salt down leg too and runs away for another four, and Forde also finds the boundary at the back-end of the over to help lift the total to 158/8 – not the worst total considering how consistently England pegged them back.

West Indies 143-7 (Shepherd 22, Matthew Forde 9) Overs: 19

Curran was absolutely exceptional in the middle overs, but his death over effort is considerably less effective. A brilliant straight drive from Shepherd, and two innovative boundary shots from Forde mean that 17 runs come off it – the most expensive over of the innings.

WICKET! West Indies 126-7 (Shepherd 16, Matthew Forde 0) Overs: 18

Gudakesh Motie, caught Jamie Overton bowled Adil Rashid, 9 (11)

Rashid returns for his fourth over and he picks up the wicket of Motie, who skies a swipe high into the sky, with Overton taking a decent catch coming in off the rope.

There’s a slight scare for England in the over as Mahmood slides to try and prevent a boundary and digs up half of Barbados as his knee gets stuck in the rain-softened turf. Thankfully he’s fine, but it’s a reminder to be careful on this damp outfield.

West Indies 122-6 (Shepherd 16, Motie 9) Overs: 17

England bring Archer back for his final over, looking to deny these two hitters a chance at the death. But he’s let down somewhat by his fielders. A thick edge flies away for four over short third, before a horror bit of fielding from Buttler allows a cut shot to run away for another boundary. Even a flick down leg off a classy slower ball isn’t stopped by Salt as yet more unnecessary runs come from the over. That’ll give his figures an expensive look, which is unfair.

WICKET! West Indies 110-6 (Shepherd 5, Motie 8) Overs: 16

Rovman Powell, bowled Dan Mousley, 43 (41b)

It’s a first international wicket for Dan Mousley, bowling his third over of the night. The offspinner’s trick delivery is a pace-on yorker, which was a feature of his efforts in The Hundred this summer. It fools and cleans up the captain Powell, and the 23-year-old is mobbed by his teammates. What a moment for him!

He almost gets a second off the over as a big swing from Motie catches a thick edge that flies through a vacant first slip.

West Indies 101-5 (Powell 43, Shepherd 4) Overs: 15

Rashid has proved relatively expensive this evening and Powell goes after him again. A miscue still carries all the way for six, dropping just over the rope at a vacant deep cover. And the over finishes with another boundary as Powell cuts away for four – that’s the most expensive over of the match so far, with 16 runs coming from it.

West Indies 85-5 (Powell 27, Shepherd 4) Overs: 14

Mousley gets a second over and just five runs come from it, with four of those off the edge of new batter Romario Shepherd. He’s bowling nicely here, the youngster.

WICKET! West Indies 80-5 (Powell 26) Overs: 13

Sherfane Rutherford, lbw Liam Livingstone, 1 (5b)

Powell launches Livingstone miles into the sky, sending the ball soaring over the rood of the midwicket stand. It’s absolutely enormous.

But Livingstone is cheering at the end of the over as England review an lbw against Rutherford, and DRS says it’s just pitching in line, rather than outside as the umpire thought, with all three reds coming up.

England’s excellent evening continues.

West Indies 71-4 (Powell 18, Rutherford 0) Overs: 12

England are well on top here and so decide it’s an excellent time to give young Dan Mousley a turn with the ball. He very nearly sneaks one through Powell, and concedes just a single from his over.

WICKET! West Indies 70-4 (Powell 17) Overs: 11

Nicholas Pooran, stumped Phil Salt bowled Liam Livingstone, 14 (23)

Powell goes after Livingstone with a brutal swipe to the midwicket boundary, but the England all-rounder strikes off the final ball of his over, ripping one past the onrushing Pooran to give Salt a simple stumping. That’s a huge wicket, removing one of the form batters in the world after an uncharacteristic struggle of a knock.

West Indies 63-3 (Pooran 13, Powell 11) Overs: 10

Curran is proving very tricky to get away here, going through his change-ups and conceding just three singles from his second over. Excellent bowling.

West Indies 60-3 (Pooran 12, Powell 9) Overs: 9

Pooran and Powell are looking very proactive against spin, and they get things ticking over again with Adil Rashid in action.

Six runs come from the over.

West Indies 54-3 (Pooran 10, Powell 5) Overs: 8

Sam Curran comes into the attack, and just like in the first T20 it’s his middle-overs bowling that proves more effective than his efforts at the death.

Powell gets completely bogged down as Curran sticks it into the surface, and it’s a maiden. Impressive stuff from the left-armer.

West Indies 54-3 (Pooran 10, Powell 5) Overs: 7

The end of the powerplay means it’s Adil Rashid time, but his first over is an expensive one. No boundaries but ten runs come from it as Powell and Pooran run hard.

West Indies 44-3 (Pooran 5, Powell 1) Overs: 6

A third over for Mahmood too, as England give their best seamers the run through the powerplay. Four leg byes mean that five runs come in total from the over, as West Indies reach 44/3 after six. That’s another excellent powerplay for England.

West Indies 39-3 (Pooran 5, Powell 0) Overs: 5

A tickle down leg gives West Indies a boundary off the first ball of Jofra Archer’s third over, but he bowls really nicely for the remainder of the over, going for no further runs. That’ll likely be the end of this extended opening spell from him.

WICKET! West Indies 35-3 (Pooran 1, Powell 0) Overs: 4

Roston Chase, lbw Saqib Mahmood, 13 (7)

West Indies rattle along despite the fall of wickets. Chase drives a full ball beautifully to the rope, and picks out the cover boundary again, aided by a misfield from Sam Curran.

But, after two big-swinging deliveries are called wide, Mahmood finishes the over in style as he raps Chase on the back pad and the finger goes up. It’s a great delivery, but quite high – West Indies review but it’s umpire’s call so Chase has to go.

WICKET! West Indies 25-2 (Chase 5, Pooran 1) Overs: 3

Evin Lewis, caught Phil Salt bowled Jofra Archer, 8 (9)

Lewis is an outstanding T20 opener and he latches on to one that’s a bit too straight from Archer, whipping it away to the rope for four.

But England’s strike bowler responds with a peach that lifts on the left hander and leaves him too, taking the glove on its way through to Salt. That would have got most batters out – “it’s a brute of a delivery” says Mark Butcher on commentary.

He almost gets two in two, with a very similar delivery edged through the hands of a leaping Jamie Overton at first slip. It would have been a good catch, but probably should have been taken.

Pooran top edges into his own grill as the final ball of an excellent over gets bigger on him than expected. Class from Archer and England are once again in the running in this powerplay.

WICKET! West Indies 16-1 (Lewis 4, Pooran 1) Overs: 2

Brandon King, caught Liam Livingstone bowled Saqib Mahmood, 1 (3 balls)

King goes after Mahmood’s second delivery,  but the ball leaves him a touch and he slices it miles into the Barbados sky. Livingstone has a long time to wait for the catch, but steadies himself and takes it safely. Mahmood’s excellent series continues.

The rest of the over sees the swing prove tricky for Mahmood to handle too. A delivery that drifts towards leg then starts to hoop alarmingly, and Phil Salt can’t stop it either, gifting five wides. Three further wides follow in the over.

That sort of movement is too tempting not to lean into though, and so he keeps pitching it up, rapping Pooran on the pad – it’s high and England wisely opt not to review.

West Indies 6-0 (Lewis 4, King 1) Overs: 1

Jofra Archer takes the new ball and there’s a lot of movement, too much movement if anything. The first ball whips away a mile for a wide, and another delivery in the over hoops so far that Lewis is able to cut it away through where a third or fourth slip would be. But overall it’s a very tricky over for the two batters and they’ll be happy to have negotiated it relatively safely.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST MATCH

England put in a hugely impressive showing in Saturday’s opening match of the T20 leg of the tour. Early wickets helped stunt a strong West Indies batting lineup, with Saqib Mahmood bagging three wickets in the powerplay as part of his impressive returns of 4/34.

Set a target of 183, England cruised to the winning post thanks to yet another Caribbean century from Phil Salt, who continues his remarkable record in the West Indies in a Player of the Match display. Salt was aided by a classy half-century from young Jacob Bethell, who will join up with the England Test squad in New Zealand in that upcoming tour and has all the attributes to be a cross-format star at the top level – certainly on Saturday’s evidence.

Jofra Archer is back for England have being rested for that opening match of the series, returning for Reece Topley, who has a slight fitness concern.

West Indies have made three changes: Roston Chase for Shimron Hetmyer, Matthew Forde for Shamar Joseph, and Terrance Hinds on debut in place of the injured Andre Russell.

ENGLAND BACK ON FAMILIAR GROUND

After the disappointment of the ODI series, England are back on familiar ground with the T20 format and put in a strong showing in the series opener last night, cruising to an impressive win.

A promising but inexperienced squad will hope to continue to make strong cases for their future involvement in England’s T20 plans during the remainder of the tour.
