Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Andy Murray eases to victory as Roger ...

4 Jul 2023

Andy Murray returned to action at Wimbledon on day two with a straight-forward victory over Ryan Peniston. Roger Federer made a guest appearance on Centre Court, too, with the eight-time Wimbledon champion, whose men’s record could be equalled by Novak Djokovic this fortnight, retiring from tennis last September.

Murray had too much for his fellow Brit and advances to the second round on Thursday. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz sizzled on Court One with the roof on after rain hit SW19, the Spaniard was far too strong for Jeremy Chardy.

British No 1 Cameron Norrie, who reached the semi-finals last year, also started his campaign against Tomas Machac. Follow live scores and updates from Wimbledon in our live blog

Some post-match words from Andy Murray: “Started off the match i was quite nervous at the beginning, came out and was playing quite tentatively.

“It’s been a long time since i felt physically this good coming into Wimbledon, the last few years have been very challenging.

“But here’s hoping I’m fit and ready for a good run.”

On Roger Federer and Kate Middleton being in the royal box: “It’s nice to be here with some royalty and some tennis royalty as well.”

Murray was just too good for his fellow British opponent.

Peniston put up a good fight in the first set, and there were some thrilling rallies throughout, but Murray stepped up to go through into the second round.

He needed two match points to do it, but the result was never in doubt.

As Tim Henman described it it was a “clinical” performance from Murray as he “went through the gears”.

After a hard fought first set, it has been quite straightforward for Murray since then, although at times he’s been made to work for it.

Murray serves out for the set, but Peniston takes the first point, making the more experienced Brit run all around the court.

Having fought back into the game, it was Murray who had set point, but he missed the drop shot, hitting it into the tramlines, and the game went to deuce.

Despite that, Murray holds to take what is looking like an unassailable two set lead.

Andy Murray* 6-3 5-0 Ryan Peniston

Another long game, but Murray was annoyed at himself there as he flashed a forehand off the edge of his racket and well out to take the game to deuce.

It’s Peniston’s second serves that are causing him problems, and have been throughout the match, just winning 32% of points on it.

Peniston served his first ace of the match, at 88mph, but followed it up with a double fault.

And Murray takes the game, just one more game needed for the Scot to take the second set.

After a difficult start, Murray seems to have found his groove, with Peniston struggling to find a way back into this match now.

Murray challenged a call when needing just one more point, and will have one challenge less as the match continues, but that decision allowed Peniston back into the game.

He won three points in a row to take it to deuce, but an ace to secure advantage and a fortunate bounce of the net, and the second set is now looking out of reach.

On another note, I am really enjoying that kid’s homemade sign in the crowd that the camera keeps flicking to. It’s very well-coloured. There is also a little girl with a Scotland flag on her cheek.

Wimbledon apologise after people left waiting over 10 hours in queue

16:54 , Kieran Jackson

Wimbledon have issued an apology after people in the queue were forced to wait over 10 hours to enter the grounds on Monday.

Fans made their irritation known on social media as slow security resulted in many people waiting for hours on end on day one of the tournament.

Executives at the All England Club have been nervous about the potential for a protest during the fortnight, particularly from Just Stop Oil after they invaded the pitch at the Ashes Test at Lord’s last week, following previous incidents at the Grand National and World Snooker Championship.

Bags were being heavily scrutinised upon entry to the grounds, with chalk dust and powders the latest items banned by Wimbledon, as well as cable ties, glue, chains and padlocks on the list of prohibited items.

This is all just falling away now from the Essex-born Peniston. He was taking games deep in the first set, but Murray has settled down and found his rhythm and it’s just looking a bit more challenging.

That said, Peniston took a 30-0 lead, but a missed shot off the net allowed Murray back in to 30-0.

The key ingredient making Carlos Alcaraz tennis’ next best showman after Wimbledon win

16:33 , Kieran Jackson

By Kieran Jackson on Court 1

Poor old Jeremy Chardy. Go out against the best in the business, they said. What match is experience for youthful exuberance, they said. Announcing his retirement from singles ahead of Wimbledon, the 36-year-old journeyman had the sort-of glamour match-up athletes in their final years either love or loathe. Sadly for Chardy, world number one Carlos Alcaraz gave him little choice in the matter.

For a long while, it seemed set to be a demolition job on Court 1. In fact, it seemed genuinely plausible that a triple bagel – which has not been achieved in a main-draw Grand Slam match since 1993 – was on the cards. Alcaraz, tennis’ next star prodigy turn dominant force, wrapped up the first set in just 22 minutes. The Roger Federer fanfare over on Centre Court had not even started.

In the end, much owed to Chardy’s valiant resilience in what proved to be his final set of singles tennis, the world No 1 had to settle for conceding seven games, on his way to a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 victory. A few hairy moments in the third set may, over the course of the fortnight, prove useful. Not every point will be with a favourable scoreboard in his favour, particularly on grass at what is only Alcaraz’s third Wimbledon.

Peniston sits outside the top 250, but has had a remarkable journey. He was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer when he was just a year old.

As a result of surgery and chemotherapy Peniston’s growth was stunted until he was 15, and has gone through universities to make it into tennis.

It is a remarkable journey that has brought him to facing Murray at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2023: Why Andy Murray is still ‘our champion’

12:34 , Jamie Braidwood

Ten years: who knows where they went. Even now, watching back Andy Murray’s victory in the 2013 Wimbledon final manages to tie a knot in your stomach. The pressure and weight of history, climaxing in that tortuous final game, feel just as overwhelming, right until that last shot from Novak Djokovic drifts long in the haze of Centre Court. That winning moment – “the waiting is over!” – still raises goosebumps on your arm.

The tenth anniversary of Murray’s defining moment, and arguably the greatest individual triumph in British sporting history, naturally brings time for reflection: a celebration of how an awkward, gangly outsider who struggled to be fully embraced by the public, persevered through heartbreak and expectation to become a much-loved champion, a player universally respected for his values and commitment to equality and fairness as much as his determination to end Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles winner.

Ten years on, Murray has never felt more like our champion.

Wimbledon 2023

The good news is we have two closed roofs at Wimbledon, so the afternoon’s action on Centre Court and Court One will be unaffected.

Wimbledon 2023: Katie Boulter vs Daria Saville latest score

12:11 , Jamie Braidwood

RAIN! The heavens have opened and umbrellas are going up around the grounds as the covers are pulled over the courts.

Play has been suspended on all courts. Hopefully this doesn’t last for long, but that might be a bit optimistic looking at this afternoon’s forecast.

Wimbledon 2023: Katie Boulter vs Daria Saville latest score

12:10 , Jamie Braidwood

*Katie Boulter 5-6 Daria Saville

Saville passes a a nervy moment as Boulter gets back to 30-30 on the Australian’s serve, but she manages to get the hold as the British No 1 floats a forehand long. Saville is certainly standing up to the challenge here and is making life difficult for Boulter, who will need to hold serve to stay in the set.

Wimbledon 2023: George Loffhagen vs Holger Rune latest score

12:07 , Kieran Jackson

George Loffhagen 6-7(4) Holger Rune*

A blow for the Brit, with the sixth seed just proving more consistent and on the front-foot in that tie-break - he takes it 7-4.

Plenty to build on for Loffhagen, though.

Into a tie-break we go!

Feel this is bigger for the British wild-card than it is for the Dane.... we shall see...

After those long deuce games we’ve had a run of holds on Court 18. Boulter thumps down a couple of big serves as Jodie Burrage, who won yesterday, claps in encouragement.

The stars are certainly out today: Roger Federer has arrived ahead of his special celebration on Centre Court this afternoon.

Still on serve in the first-set - the Brit more than holding his own against the sixth seed from Denmark!

Wimbledon 2023: Katie Boulter vs Daria Saville latest score

11:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Katie Boulter 2-2 Daria Saville*

Break! A fourth game in a row goes to deuce and this time Saville can take her chance. The Australian plays a lovely forehand winner down the line to get back on terms.

Play is still going on - it was perhaps just a few early spits, but it does feel like a downpour is on the way.

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, is watching Boulter alongside the former British No 1 Laura Robson.

Why did Venus Williams not shake hands with umpire at Wimbledon?

10:46 , Kieran Jackson

Venus Williams refused to shake hands with the chair umpire after her first-round loss at Wimbledon on Monday because she disagreed with a contentious call which ended the match.

Williams, playing in the women’s singles at the All England Club for a record 24th time, was hampered by an early slip in her match against Elina Svitolina on Centre Court and succumbed to defeat.

Yet the match did end in controversial circumstances.

Wimbledon 2023: Defending champ Elena Rybakina on ‘tough’ build up

10:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Defending champion Elena Rybakina on her Wimbledon preparations, after battling with a virus following the French Open: “Of course, the preparation we did, I would say it was good, but still not the amount of hours and work we wanted to put in.

“Overall I think we did maximum what we could. It wasn’t easy after French Open because it took me... I mean, one week I didn’t do anything, then slowly start. It’s been tough.

“Of course it’s different this year. I won’t say that I feel so much pressure. Of course, people are talking around. The important thing is that we keep on working with the team. They’re also trying to help me out, to prepare for the matches.

“Yeah, I think this is something to get used also. Hopefully my level is going to stay that high and it’s going to be a normal thing to come and defend. Of course, now it’s something new, but as I said, this is just the next step to the goal.”

Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon unbeaten streak

10:09 , Jack Rathborn

It’s fair to say Novak Djokovic is making Wimbledon a fortress, much like Rafa Nadal and Roland Garros, after his first round win over Pedro Cachin, it’s now 2,183 days since his last defeat at SW19.

The Serbian has some way to go to match the Spaniard’s formidable record in Paris, but the last man to defeat Djokovic at Wimbledon was Tomas Berdych in 2017. That means his record over the last five Wimbledon tournaments is 29-0.

Djokovic‘s last defeat on Centre Court came with just six grand slams and Carlos Alcaraz was just 10 years old.

Good morning

08:01 , Jamie Braidwood

Andy Murray returns to action at Wimbledon on day two as Roger Federer makes a guest appearance on Centre Court. The eight-time Wimbledon champion, whose men’s record of eight titles could be equalled by Novak Djokovic this fortnight, retired from tennis last September and has been invited back to the All England Club for a celebration of his career.

Murray faces fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in his opening match, with defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina starting the day’s play against Shelby Rodgers. Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and Daniil Medvedev are among the top seeds in action on a busy day at Wimbledon - which could be disrupted with rain forecast for the afternoon.

British No 1s Cameron Norrie, who reached the semi-finals last year, and Katie Boulter are scheduled to get their campaigns underway. Coco Gauff was the biggest casualty on the opening day on Monday as the seventh seed fell to Sofia Kenin, while Venus Williams went out fighting as the 43-year-old played on through injury during her defeat to Elina Svitolina.
