Indonesia started well and had chances in the rain. But as the rain subsided, Japan, who are 115 places ahead of Indonesia in the FIFA Ranking, began to find their rhythm.

Goals from Justin Hubner (own goal), Takumi Minamino, Hidemasa Morita, and Sugawara gave the Blue Samurai the lead. They handed Indonesia their second defeat.

The defeat left Indonesia at the bottom of the standings in sixth place with three points from five games. They are two points behind Bahrain in fifth place.

Japan remained unbeaten in five matches. They now sit firmly at the top of the standings with 13 points, three ahead of Australia, Saudi Arabia, and China.

After 10 matches, the top two teams in each group will qualify for the final round of the 2026 World Cup. The third- and fourth-placed teams will compete in the fourth round for additional tickets to the final round. Meanwhile, the fifth and sixth-placed teams will be eliminated.

So what are the chances of the Indonesian national team after the loss to Japan?

Their chances of qualifying are still open. Indonesia still has 5 matches to play, with a total of 15 points possible. The maximum number of points that can be gained is still greater than the gap between Indonesia and the teams in the top two places (direct tickets to the final round), especially with the two teams in third and fourth place (qualifying for the fourth round).

In the remaining five matches, Indonesia will face the same opponents but at different venues. Indonesia will need to get their first win quickly to keep their chances of qualifying intact.
