Battle for K-Pop crown as BTS boyband take break for military service

With Suga the latest member of the record breaking K-Pop boyband BTS starting his mandatory military service the boys are taking a step back from the limelight. We take a look at the other bands hoping to take their throne.

With military service compulsory for all able-bodied men in South Korea the world's biggest K-pop group BTS has been decimated with 3 members in the army now. Stars Jin and J-Hope are already on active service and now Suga has joined them.

The group have a total of 23 Guinness World Records titles after claiming their first in 2018 when they became the first K-pop act to reach number one in the US album chart with Love Yourself: Tear.

K-pop is one of the fastest growing music markets in the world with the bands not just huge in the Asian markets but goring increasingly popular in the US and UK. Boyband BTS have led the way but girl groups such as Blackpink and Red Velvet have been hot on their heels.

So here we introduce you to the contenders for the crown. From boyband Seventeen, so named because there's 13 of them in 3 units making 1 group apparently, to newcomers IVE and TXT or Tomorrow X Together.
