Fernando Torres has hinted that he intends to play in next year’s Liverpool Legends game after scoring in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Ajax.

The Spaniard, who was making his debut for the veterans’ side, scored the Reds’ fourth late on as he scrambled home Mark Gonzalez’s low cross in front of the Kop. However, that strike only came after he squandered countless other opportunities.

Admitting he cramped up early in the second half, Torres fought on to eventually mark his maiden Legends appearance with a goal. And after thanking manager Sven-Goran Eriksson for leaving him on, he hinted that he intends to play in next year’s annual charity match after vowing to ‘come back a little bit better’.

“It’s always special to play at Anfield and scoring in front of the Kop - even more so today because we are here to help the foundation,” he said. “It doesn’t matter, we have things to do and I’m happy to help.

“It’s the first time I can come because normally I am coaching and cannot find the time so I was really looking forward to it.

“It’s nice to be back. It’s the first time I’ve been back since I finished football five years ago.

“I always have the hope to do it (score), these things take time. Scoring for Liverpool is a big thing. I tried many times, but I couldn't do it.

“I tried that connection with Stevie (Gerrard) many times before, unfortunately we don’t have the same legs as before but we tried. After 50 minutes, I had cramps everywhere.

“I always have hopes to score - thanks to the boss for not taking me out! I did in the end (score) and I was happy. I just wanted to score in my first Liverpool game after many years. I did it!

“I’m not fit, trust me! I’ll do my best to train every day and come again next season and come back a little bit better.”
