Welcome to Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Titans IPL 2024 match being played in Mullanpur, Mohali on Sunday.

GT 29/1 in 4 overs

Arshdeep. Single on the first ball. Two singles in two balls. OUT! Saha pulls it straight to short midwicket. Easy dismissal and Punjab is roaring, finally.

Sai Sudharsan at the crease. And begins his innings with a cracking cut past point for four.

GT 21/0 in 3 overs

Rabada for his second. Gill smashes him for two four back to back. First a swat behind square and then a flick towards midwicket.

GT 12/0 in 2 overs

Arshdeep from the other end. Single on the first ball. Four runs in first five balls. Gujarat taking things slow right now.

GT 7/0 in 1 over

Saha and Gill open the innings. Kagiso Rabada with the new ball.

Saha off the mark with a single off the inside edge. Gills plays two dot balls to start with. Single on the fourth ball. Saha drives past point and gets the first boundary of the innings. Seven off the over.

Back at it

A fairly moderate total to chase - 143. There was turn and the pitch was a bit slow. Will PBKS bowlers make something out of this, or will it be an easy chase for Gujarat?

Sai Kishore: Tried to give my 120% for the team, happy it paid off

I felt I should slow it down. My instincts told me to slow down. I followed my instincts and delivered. After the first two deliveries, I realised that into the wicket is the line to bowl to on this wicket.

PBKS 142 all out in 20 Overs

Mohit to close out the innings. Gujarat makes its impact sub switch : Sandeep Warrier out, Sai Sudarshan is in. Meanwhile, Harpreet gets a run through long on. Harshal Patel takes strikes and looking to go big, ends up holing out to Shahrukh Khan at the long on boundary for a golden duck.

Harshal Patel c Shahrukh Khan b Sharma 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)

Rabada is the last batter in and right off the bat, a potential run out is escaped. Harpreet has three balls to get PBKS past 150 and attempts some big shots which finds fielders in safety, but he refuses to run to stay on strike. This is absurd. Mohit varies his pace yet again and bowls into the stumps, with Harpreet going low to sweep but makes a mess of it. The pair a single, but Harpreet is caught short of his crease. A bizarre end to a rather underwhelming batting effort from Punjab Kings.

PBKS 139/8 in 19 Overs

Sai Kishore will bowl out. Aggression from skipper Gill. Sticks to his fuller balls up front, giving the batters tempting offers outside off. The second delivery is a tad too deviant. Wide called. Brar dispatches the next over to long off where David Miller runs in on tme but makes a mess of the catch. How much can Brar add courtesy this lifeline?

Looks like the escape has given Brar some adrenaline in his veins. He smacks Sai Kishore for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries, the first a slog sweep through midwicket and the second straight down the ground. Sai Kishore, once again, has the last laugh as he sends in a slower delivery to outsmart Brar. He holes out to Shahrukh Khan after the drop in pace of the ball gave it no momentum to get past the ropes.

Harpreet Brar c Shahrukh Khan b Sai Kishore 29 (12b 4x4 1x6)

FOUR WICKET HAUL FOR SAI KISHORE

PBKS 125/7 in 18 Overs

Mohit Sharma returns. Harpreet Bhatia who looks to pull him for a boundary cops a blow on his ribs. He is checked out by the team doctor. But they’ve managed to run a single by then. Harpreet Brar then swats for two boundaries on the trot, first through backward square and the other through midwicket. Mohit varied his pace, but Brar’s placement has been impeccable here. The pair then manage a couple of single through midwicket. 11 runs come off this over from Mohit. A marked change in momentum, even if it comes with a dollop of nerves on the side.

PBKS 114/7 in 17 Overs

Shubman decides to stick with spin and it is Shahrukh Khan who has the ball now. He has not bowled so far in this tournament and has a chance to mark a victorious start with the ball with an lbw appeal for Harpreet Singh’s wicket. Harpreet looking to sweep misses and GT thinks they have him. PBKS reviews and their batter is saved by the replay. Singh then pushes the ball to long on for a single. Brar goes aerial but the ball lands safely between long on and deep midwicket. Two runs. Bhatia comes down the track and nudges the ball through midwicket for two runs. He then straight bats Shahrukh through cover to finish the over with a single.

PBKS 107/7 in 17 Overs

Shubman decides to stick with spin and it is Shahrukh Khan who has the ball now. He has not bowled so far in this tournament and has a chance to mark a victorious start with the ball with an lbw appeal for Harpreet Singh’s wicket. Harpreet looking to sweep misses and GT thinks they have him. PBKS reviews and their batter is saved by the replay.

PBKS 107/7 in 16 Overs

Sai Kishore to bowl his third. Shashank negotiates him off his pads to run two. But he just hasn’t caught the lengths today and ends up sending the ball back to Sai who takes a brilliant low catch off his bowling for his third wicket off the night.

Shashank Singh c & b Sai Kishore 8 (12b 0x4 0x6)

Harpreet Brar joins his namesake in the middle with a dismal scoreboard. Brar manages to sweep Sai Kishore for a boundary to give PBKS a few runs

PBKS 97/6 in 15 Overs

Rashid Khan will now bowl out and gives away just four runs. Finishes with 4-0-15-1. A nice return to Rashid of old after struggling a bit with the ball this season.

PBKS 93/6 in 14 Overs

Sai Kishgore returns and there’s a big LBW appeal first up. Batter in the hot seat is the imperious Ashutosh Sharma. The balls headed into the leg stump. Umpires are not interested, so Shubman reviews. His 100% record with reviews is broken as we see the ball missing the stumps in the replay. Sai Kishore is beating the PBKS batters on height here, with the ball staying low. First Shashank Singh tries to slog out a six straight down the ground which David Miller can’t get to in time beyond mid off. But Sai Kishore removes Ashutosh Sharma who tries to go big yet again by coming down the ground, hasn’t hit that cleanly as it flies over to extra cover, only to land in Mohit Sharma’s hands.

Ashutosh Sharma c Sharma b Sai Kishore 3 (8b 0x4 0x6)

PBKS 90/5 in 13 Overs

Noor will bowl out. Shashank and Ashutosh are happy to see him off without much risk. And a timeout will be taken.

PBKS 86/5 in 12 Overs

GT stays with spin with Sai Kishore coming on. Jitesh is a good player of spin and he presents evidence with a nice smack off a fuller delivery over long off for six. But Sai Kishore will have the last laugh here as he drags Jitesh down the track, drawing out a shot, but foxing him by slowing down his pace to clean up the stumps. Brilliant piece of bowling.

Jitesh Sharma b Sai Kishore 13 (12b 0x4 1x6)

PBKS 80/4 in 11 Overs

Noor Ahmed returns. Liam Livingstone paddles the ball fine for a boundary. Some relief for PBKS, but Livingstone is struggling to pick Noor. OH WHAT DO YOU KNOW! Noor has his man. There’s a slip in place for him and a failed sweep attempted on a googly throws up a big edge that’s caught in first slip.

Liam Livingstone c Tewatia b Noor Ahmad 6 (9b 1x4 0x6)

That brings Shashank Singh to the crease now. What can he do today?

PBKS 74/3 in 10 overs

Rashid continues. Gets a bit of width and Jitesh cuts. Good fielding inside the circle and it’ll be a double. Single on the next ball. Three runs in four balls. Four runs from the over.

PBKS 70/3 in 9 overs

Noor Ahmed. Jitesh takes a single on the first ball. A slip and a short leg for Livingstone. He takes a single. Attempted sweep, another LBW appeal, same drill but GT doesn’t take a review this time. Three runs from the over.

PBKS 67/3 in 8 overs

Jitesh Sharma is here.

Rashid Khan for his second. Two runs in first three balls. Curran now pushes the ball towards cover and takes a double. Another appeal for LBW and once again umpire says not out. GT takes a review again. Three reds and OUT! Once again decision reversed. Curran has to go.

Liam Livingstone defends the first ball.

PBKS 63/2 in 7 overs

Noor Ahmed. Single on the first ball towards square. Three singles in first three balls. Rossouw takes out the reverse sweep and hits it past short fine leg for four. A huge appeal on the last ball for LBW. Nothing from umpire but Gujarat is interested and takes a review. No bat involved. Three reds and decision reversed. Rossouw is OUT.

PBKS 56/1 in 6 overs

Mohit for his second. Single on the first ball. Short ball and Prabhsimran once again takes out his upper cut for a SIX! Fifty-up for Punjab. OUT!! Prabhsimran charges, goes for a slog, and gets an edge straight to keeper.

Riley Rossouw at number three. Wide yorker and Rossouw slashes it past backward point for four on the first ball. Bouncer and a dot. 11 runs and a wicket in that over.

PBKS 45/0 in 5 overs

Rashid Khan into the attack. Two runs in first three balls. Dot on the fourth ball. Just three runs from the over.

PBKS 42/0 in 4 overs

Mohit Sharma into the attack. FOUR! Curran slashes, gets an edge but goes for four past keeper. Bouncer and Curran can’t put bat to ball. Two dots on the trot. Another bouncer but this it is called wide. A single on the fourth ball. Eight from the over.

PBKS 34/0 in 3 overs

Omarzai. FOUR! Now Curran smacks past point on the first ball. Takes a single on the next ball. Prabhsimran looking to charge but doesn’t time it. SIX! Picked up over square leg! Brilliant shot. 11 runs from the over.

PBKS 23/0 in 2 overs

Sandeep Warrier. Full on the pads and Prabhsimran guides it fine for four to start the over. Dot ball. Hint of swing and beats Prabhsimran. Double on the fourth ball towards square leg. This time Prabhsimran charges and hits it over mid off for four! Now he upper cuts over short third for a six. It’s a waist height no ball as well! FOUR! Slapped over cover to end the over.

PBKS 2/0 in 1 over

Omarzai with the new ball. First ball, yorker, and beats Curran. Second, full on the pads, Curran works it towards leg for a single. Prabhsimran plays a dot. Two dots in a row. Half-hearted appeal on the fifth ball for LBW. Nothing. Drives on the last ball and takes a single.

All set

Prabhsimran Singh and Sam Curran are opening the innings.

Law of averages catching up with Gujarat Titans?

The law of averages seems to have caught up with Gujarat, which enjoyed a dream run in its first two seasons. During its fourth defeat in seven games this year, the 2022 champion slumped to an 89-run total against Delhi Capitals, in which No. 8 Rashid Khan contributed 31.

Barring skipper Shubman Gill, GT’s top scorer, no batter who has faced a minimum of 10 balls has a strike rate over 140 or an average above 35. With a shaky middle order, Sai Sudharsan will need to convert his starts into big scores and strike at a faster clip.

MATCH PREVIEW : PBKS vs GT by Dhruva Prasad

Though statisticians will revel in the aesthetic symmetry of the first reverse fixture of the Indian Premier League (IPL) marking exactly the halfway point of the tournament, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans (GT) will be preoccupied with getting their pear-shaped campaigns back on track when they meet at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.

Can Punjab Kings finally cross the line today?

The host side will hope for some of the momentum to return too as it locks horns with a side against which it last tasted success, in a stunning run-chase that saw the birth of the Shashank Singh-Ashutosh Sharma phenomenon.
