As if anything else was to ever expected, our support yesterday at Wembley Stadium surpassed expectations.

Walking up Wembley Way or even mulling around the capital across the weekend, it was hard not to spot a sea of red that dominated areas in the build-up to the game.

Erik ten Hag and his players can hold their heads high on what has been a terrific campaign, and perhaps something of a bigger bonus is how the connection between the fans and the team has never been stronger.

In the 62 times the Reds took to the field during the 22/23 campaign, every time, supporters of all ages turned out in their droves, and yesterday at the national stadium was no different.

With scarves and hats a plenty, the occasion was one to revel in especially in the build-up, especially as Ten Hag took his traditional walk around the pitch ahead of kick-off.

It's something we know Erik feels strongly about, that mantra of togetherness, echoed in his post-match interview after our defeat against Pep Guardiola's side.

''Absolutely [our progress is positive],'' began the boss. "And that's why I think we have to emphasize that today that we’ve made huge progress.

''I think you can't expect more than just what we did this season. The team, the individuals and the whole club. The togetherness with the fans. It's amazing.''

Bruno Fernandes levelled the scoring during the first-half from the penalty spot, with his passion and endeavour to succeed for our supporters clear to see as always.

Our no.8 was typically professional but also disappointed the Reds couldn't get the job done, but hopes that motivation can be used to spur us on to future success, with delivering for our fans always at the forefront of his mind.

''The disappointment in the dressing room is also because we couldn’t [do] the job for the fans that they really deserve,'' he said.

''They really deserve it [for] what they have done the entire season for us.

''All the support they have given to us… we are really, really, grateful for everything they have been doing for us throughout the season.

''The only promise that I can [make] is that next season we will come again and try again.''
