Argentina vs curaçao

The World Cup victory tour for Lionel Messi and Argentina continues as they host CONCACAF minnows Curacao at Estadio Unico in Santiago del Estero.

Messi scored as the Albiceleste dispatched Panama in Buenos Aires on Thursday by a 2-0 score in their first game back since hoisting the World Cup trophy in Qatar.

That goal, Argentina's second after young Thiago Almada's opener, marked the 800th of his professional career for club and country, but he's not done scoring just yet. Now, the 35-year-old superstar will gun for his 100th career international goal here in this match as the celebration of the triumph in Qatar continues.

Curacao, ranked 85th in the world, troubled both Canada and Honduras in the CONCACAF Nations League, but fell just short of contending for a finals spot. They have never played Argentina in their nation's history, and given that CONCACAF will host the 2026 World Cup, this could be a huge step in their development as they aim for qualification in four years' time.

Argentina vs Curacao projected lineups & team news

Seeing as this international break is serving essentially as a World Cup victory tour for Argentina, head coach Lionel Scaloni deployed a lineup identical to that from Qatar against Panama five days ago, and he's likely to do the same here as well.

If he's to make any tweaks, young Thiago Almada could be given a vote of confidence after his excellent performance against Panama, which included coming off the bench to score the opener.

Others who could be given a chance in the starting lineup include Lautaro MartinezLisandro Martinez, and Paulo Dybala, all of whom are playing well at the club level and appeared against Panama off the bench.

Argentina projected starting lineup (4-3-3): E. Martinez (GK) — Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliafico — de Paul, E. Fernandez, Mac Allister — Messi, Alvarez, Di Maria.

Curacao have a quick turnaround from their last fixture, but their veteran players will be chomping at the bit for the chance to play in this match against the World Cup champions, and that could keep head coach Remko Bicentini from making too many changes.

Captain Cuco Martina is a savvy defender with Premier League experience at Everton and Southampton, currently at Dutch side NAC Breda. Meanwhile, starting goalkeeper Eloy Room is a 34-year-old veteran who currently starts for Columbus Crew in MLS.

Premier League fans will also recognize Leandro Bacuna, a defensive midfielder with Watford who has spent time in the English top-flight. Leandro's younger brother Juninho Bacuna could start alongside in midfield, as the Birmingham City man has 15 international caps. It will be interesting to see if Jurien Gaari gets another run-out after being sent off against Canada in their Nations League match back on Friday.

Curacao projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Room (GK) — Gaari, van Eijma, Gaari, Floranus — L. Bacuna, J. Bacuna, Anita — L. Kuwas, Janga, Zivokvic.
