U.S. Embassy Jakarta Promotes Collaborative Cultural Connections ...

Indonesia

JAKARTA – In celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Indonesia, the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta is hosting the Drew Tucker and the New Standard Band in Indonesia from April 28 to May 12, 2024. To promote dialogue and inspire collaboration between Indonesians and Americans, the Florida-based hip-hop, pop, and jazz quintet will lead a series of musical performances and educational workshops featuring the vibraphone and the tuba.

The initiative, facilitated by the Department of State’s Arts Envoy program, will explore how jazz can be a tool to promote the shared values of free expression, diversity, and inclusion through the lens of cultural exchange and economic development.

The program highlights the U.S. government’s support for Indonesia’s creative economy and strengthening networks within the music industry. This initiative underscores the U.S. Embassy commitment to achieving people’s prosperity and echoes the celebration of the 75th anniversary theme: Diversity, Democracy, Prosperity.

“The United States and Indonesia have a longstanding tradition of shared values, as embodied in each country’s mottos: E Pluribus Unum and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” noted Embassy Spokesperson Michael Quinlan. “Exchange programs such as this open doors for dialogue and shared learning, and music provides a wonderful opportunity to communicate.”

In Jakarta, Drew Tucker and the New Standard will give a public performance at @america on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM; in partnership with Forum Jazz Indonesia.

Drew Tucker & The New Standard has made it their mission to make their uncommon feature instruments, the vibraphone and tuba, more accessible to its fans and the broader population. Front man musician and educator Drew Tucker is leading the movement to reinvent the vibraphone: a dynamic instrument that he melds with soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences to capture audiences nationwide. Drew has revitalized underserved neighborhoods through the creation of arts centers and was the driving force behind the development of Arts Garage in Delray Beach, the Bailey and Ali Cultural Arts Center, and Old School Square.
