Jonathan Majors Steps Down From Gotham Film Board
Jonathan Majors is cutting ties with the Gotham Film & Media Institute in the latest development in the fallout from the actor’s March 25 arrest.
Vanity Fair has confirmed that Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, shared a note with the board today that stated that Majors has decided to temporarily step away from the board of the Gotham Film & Media Institute and his work on behalf of the Sidney Poitier Initiative.
At the 2022 Gotham Awards, Majors took the stage to present an award to the Poitier family in honor of the late actor, who died earlier that year. “His work and activism changed the way we see movies and the way we see ourselves,” he said onstage. Majors announced the Gotham Sidney Poitier Initiative at the event, which was aimed at supporting a new generation of filmmakers through mentorship and funding. Majors had joined the board in 2022.
Over the past few days, there’s been a flurry of movement when it comes to the teams and projects attached to Majors. His publicity firm and management company have both reportedly cut ties with him, and he is reportedly no longer attached to the feature film The Man in My Basement and an Otis Redding biopic he had been considering. An ad campaign for the Texas Rangers starring Majors was pulled from airing as well.
Majors was arrested in New York on March 25 on charges of strangulation, assault, and harassment, in an alleged domestic dispute with a woman that is believed to be his romantic partner. Majors’s attorney Priya Chaudhry has stated that “Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is probably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows.” She also released a set of text messages between Majors and the woman to further argue her client’s innocence. A hearing is set for May 8.
The alleged incident occured at a time when Majors was reaching new heights in his Hollywood career. The Lovecraft Country actor starred in both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III and had recently presented at the Oscars. There is no news yet about two of his biggest upcoming projects. He was slated to continue his role of Kang in multiple future Marvel movies, and his Sundance film, Magazine Dreams, was acquired by Searchlight Pictures for release out of the festival.
