The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is proposing to cease its weekly creative sessions for young people from the end of this academic year. Members who will be affected by this are urged to contact their local regional office.

The Musicians’ Union is devastated to learn that the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) is consulting on proposals to cease its weekly Young RWCMD sessions, from the end of this academic year.

We are also very disappointed that the RWCMD chose not to include the MU in its initial formal consultation, although we are now supporting members involved.

Any members affected by these proposals, who haven’t already contacted us, should get in touch with the Wales and South West England regional office urgently via [email protected].

Our members will be losing work as a result of these proposals

We share our members’ concerns about these proposals, which are terrible news for the young people and musicians directly involved who will lose important tuition and work. However the MU understands the difficulties that organisations like RWCMD face, given the current state of higher education and culture after 14 years of austerity.

We also appreciate the College’s desire to explore alternative models of activity, but this does not change the fact that our members will be losing work as a result of these proposals.

We are currently seeking further information on the proposals and considering our response.

Get support as a music teacher through MU membership

The MU has a strong community of teaching musicians, with over 12,000 members. We advise music teachers on specific topics, including pay and contractual issues. Through our resources and employment advice, we support and create careers in music teaching.
