Odisha train accident live: At least 288 people were killed and several hundreds injured after a three-train collision in Odisha's Balasore district, officials said Saturday. Horrific scenes at the crash site saw overturned bogies and smashed coaches with bloodstained debris. The incident involving the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a goods train, is considered as one of the deadliest train tragedies in the country in over two decades.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the scene, talked to rescue workers and inspected the wreckage. He also met the survivors at hospitals. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced has ordered a high-level probe into the derailment.

Odisha CM announces ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to kin of deceased, ₹1 lakh to injured

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced a compensation of ₹5 lakhs each for the next of kin of those people from the state who died in the accident, while ₹1 lakh each for those with serious injuries.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on restoration work

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while speaking on the restoration work at the accident site said, “NDRF, ODRF, and Railway teams have worked all night for the identification of the deceased and restoration of tracks.”

He added, “Union Health Minister has reached Odisha, he will visit hospitals and take stock of the situation. Many trains have been cancelled and diverted. We are working on the restoration of the tracks.”

‘Root cause of accident identified’: Railway minister 

Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Sunday inspected the restoration work at the accident site in Balasore. “The root cause of this accident has been identified. PM Modi inspected the site yesterday. We will try to restore the track today. All bodies have been removed. Our target is to finish the restoration work by Wednesday morning so that trains can start running on this track,” he said.

South Eastern Railway CPRO Aditya Kumar Chaudhary while speaking on the restoration work said that the capsized bogies along with two bogies of goods train have been removed. “Work of connecting track is going on from one side...will finish the work as soon as possible,” he told news agency ANI.
