Man Utd fans welcome arrival of Onana from Inter

Andre Onana can transform the way Manchester United play - according to his new team-mate and fellow goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

United signed Onana from Inter Milan for £47million to replace David De Gea, with boss Erik ten Hag recruiting him chiefly for his ability to play the ball out from the back.

Ten Hag watched how Ederson and Alisson have transformed the way Manchester City and Liverpool respectively, and has signed Onana to do the same for United.

Onana is expected to make his United debut on Thursday against Real Madrid in Houston, with Heaton excited at what the Cameroon international can bring to Ten Hag’s side.

“I can see already how he’s going to fit into the manager’s style,” said Heaton. “He looks really good with his feet and am already picking up a little bit up about how he does things slightly different to what I’ve seen before.

“I know I’m getting on, but I still try to adapt, still try to learn all the time. I enjoy that side of it and we will see what he brings in.

“In the Premier League we’ve got Ederson and Alisson and they’ve changed that goalkeeping side a little bit. Most teams play that way now.

“Onana has come in to us now. Time will tell. I think Pep said it was difficult for them to get on a high press on with him playing like that. I was really impressed with him in that game and I’m looking forward to working with him, competing with him and we’ll see how it plays out.”

United beat Arsenal 2-0 in the opening game of their US tour at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, with goals from captain Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho.

Both sides then took part in an exhibition penalty shootout for the 82,262 crowd, which United won 5-3, converting all of their spot-kicks.

Ten Hag and his squad arrived in San Diego last night for the second game of their tour, against Wrexham, which kicks off in the early hours of Wednesday (U.K. time).

Anthony Martial is still making his way back from a hamstring injury from last season and will be assessed before a decision is made on when he can make his first appearance on tour.
