Carabao Cup semi-final a boost for Saints owners

Southampton v Newcastle (20:00 GMT, Tue)

In January 2022, Southampton were taken over by Sport Republic, with chief executive Martin Semmens describing it as "a pivotal moment" for the club.

A year on, Saints are bottom of the Premier League and co-owner Rasmus Ankersen summed up their first 12 months in charge as a "really rough ride".

So what's going on? Has the rot set in or is it just teething problems for ambitious new owners?

A Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle on Tuesday suggests some progress, so BBC Sport went in search of answers.

Savage agree Forest Green loan

Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage has agreed a loan move to Forest Green Rovers until the end of the season.

Savage made his first-team debut for United in the Champions League last season and went on the club's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

After half a season in the Under-21s, he has opted to join Forest Green from a number of loan inquiries.

The 19-year-old is the son of former Wales international Robbie Savage.

'We have a different mentality'

Southampton boss Nathan Jones says his side are starting to feel more solid ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle.

"Well, I think it is a different mentality and a different pressure [between cup and league games]," he told Hampshire Live. "I can't speak for before I was here, but now I certainly feel that we are starting to be more solid and more organised, in terms of trying to keep clean sheets.

"If you try to just become a more fluid side, there are things we have known for a while, and there are certain things we still need to work on, so we have had to do that, but we feel we now have a more solid base and now it is about being more fluid, more aggressive and more potent."

'We might be talking quite excitedly about Newcastle in the next few days'

Southampton v Newcastle (20:00, Tue)

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards believes "we could be talking quite excitedly about Newcastle in the next few days" as the January transfer window nears its closure.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for Everton winger Anthony Gordon as a replacement for Chris Wood, after he joined Nottingham Forest last week.

Edwards told the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast: "I think we are getting to a situation now at Newcastle where their top-four challenge could falter because their squad just doesn’t have the depth that the other teams chasing a top-four finish has.

"They have kept a pretty stable starting 12 or 13 players, but I think Eddie Howe would have been very surprised to find going into the final week of the transfer window that his squad would actually be weaker which it is now.

"Anthony Gordon is an interesting one. Newcastle are interested, they had a bid rejected in the summer. He is obviously unsettled at Goodison Park and it’s whether the sums add up for Newcastle.

"I think they are going to do something in the last week and I think we might be talking quite excitedly about Newcastle in the next few days. That Gordon interest is definitely there, it’s just whether they can get the deal done."

'I think it'll just be an unbelievable second leg with the atmosphere'

Southampton v Newcastle (20:00, Tue)

Sean Longstaff

Sean Longstaff says the EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton is part of "a great year" at Newcastle.

The Magpies beat Leicester 2-0 in the quarter-final and currently sit third in the Premier League.

"If you'd said twelve months ago that we'd be third in the league and in a cup semi-final, people would have laughed at you. It's been a great year," Longstaff told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"It's a game we're really looking forward to. If we can take something back to St James' Park, I think it'll just be an unbelievable second leg with the atmosphere. I was trying to explain to the lads what it'll be like.

"We're really excited but know it's going to be a tough game.

"I can't remember the last time we were in a semi-final, to be honest. So many people are asking for tickets! It's really nice. The occasion will be really special."

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe has offered an update on the future of Ryan Fraser, who he says is not injured despite recent time out of the team.

He added: "He is not injured, he is training and will just have to keep training hard. He is valued member of the squad. I know Ryan better than anyone and I know what he is capable of. I would love to see him back in a Newcastle shirt."

'Being in the semi-final is all we cared about'

Southampton v Newcastle (20:00, Tue)

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe says just being in a semi-final is all his side "cared about" as they face Southampton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

"Just being in the semi-final is all we cared about," said Howe. "Beating Leicester was our big priority and just take whatever is in front of you.

"We know what we have to do and it is going to be tough to deliver. It is going to be two really tough games."

'Semi-final isn't enough'

Southampton v Newcastle (20:00, Tue)

Newcastle manager has his eyes on the Carabao Cup title as he says the last four "isn't enough" for his club.

If Newcastle managed to win the trophy it would be their first major domestic trophy since 1955.

"We're delighted to be where we are but the semi-final itself isn't enough," Howe said, "Ultimately, you want to get one step further. I know the players feel the same way.

"Me and my coaching team feel passionately about it that we want to make the final, but we have to navigate these two games and they're going to be very difficult.

"I think the away game will be a really good spectacle for the fans that travel and it's on television so everyone will have a chance to watch the game.

"We're desperate for the next step but we have to take our mind off that really and focus on the process and the job, and the job is to go to Southampton and perform."

Silva set to stay at Chelsea

Thiago Silva is set to sign a contract extension with Chelsea and the length of the deal is thought to keep him at the London club for another year, according to The Times.

'Man Utd should pay £100m for Kane'

Pundit and former Arsenal player Paul Merson has had his say on what Harry Kane should do next.

There has been talk of the England captain staying at Spur but Merson has urge Manchester United to buy him.

He told Sky: "He's the best centre-forward in the world. If I’m Manchester United, I’m spending £100m on Kane tomorrow. They just paid £80m for Antony and he won’t score as many goals in 10 years as Kane would score in a season for Man Utd."

Santos named Poland boss

The rumour mill does not always get it right and it has failed to do so again as former Portugal boss Fernando Santos has been named the new manager of Poland.

Steven Gerrard, who was sacked by Aston Villa earlier this season, was heavily linked to the job.

Santos was sacked as Portugal manager following the 2022 World Cup.

'I'm focused on Brighton'

Despite rumours swirling, Caicedo insists his focus is with his current club.

He told the Brighton Argus: “I am focussed on Brighton. I am here, I’m playing every day. Things from outside don’t trouble me, nor does it take that focus away because I’m focussed only on here.

“I handle [the speculation] well. You hear rumours here and there, but I only try to be focused on the club where I am now, the club which opened the doors for me to be playing every week.”

Caicedo to Arsenal?

Arsenal are understood to be interested in signing midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton, according to the Evening Standard. The 21-year-old has also received interest from Chelsea.
