ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) - The race for Carter County Sheriff is over.

After a recount Friday, the race for county sheriff was still tied and headed for a drawing.

In the drawing, challenger D.J. Long’s name was pulled, making him the next Carter County Sheriff.

Because Oklahoma state law does not allow for a runoff, state statute dictated that the race would be decided by a drawing out of a container.

On election night, the race ended with both candidates tied with 2,596 votes each.

After five provisional ballots were deemed ineligible, incumbent sheriff Chris Bryant asked for the recount.
