SPRINGFIELD — The sheriff’s deputies who will be patrolling Forest Park this summer are police academy trained — and so are the horses that some of them ride.

This summer, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office will be expanding its hours to patrol Western Massachusetts’ signature park. The deputies will cover the park from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and have extra patrols on those days when there are events or on weekends when the weather is nice and they expect plenty will flock to the park for some fun.
