Man United's new signing has already admitted he loves Liverpool

Liverpool appear to have an admirer in the form of Manchester United’s latest signing.

The Reds and their bitter rivals have already been active in the January transfer window. Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo in a deal with PSV Eindhoven that could reach more than £40m with add-ons.

At Old Trafford, the only signing for Man United is Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley, after his loan with Besiktas was terminated. Both Gakpo and Weghorst were part of the Netherlands national team at the World Cup in Qatar.

Weghorst has previously spoken about his admiration of both Liverpool and the Anfield atmosphere as a while. In 2020, when the striker was at Wolsfburg, he explained how hearing the club’s famous anthem affects him.

“I always found Liverpool very special,” Weghorst told DAZN in 2020.

“I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there.”

“I am ambitious and want to get ahead. Maybe at some point play at another club, whether in Germany or in England? But at the moment it is still far away. I feel good and try to achieve the maximum here.”

Two years earlier, Weghorst also admitted that it would be a “dream” to play for Liverpool one day in his career. He told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf in 2018: “I’ve dreamt of [playing for Liverpool] since childhood.”
